Cantilever, or side-post parasols offer the perfect shade cover.
By keeping the parasol mast to one side, they are able to provide a large, shaded area. This is the ideal shade solution in high traffic areas. Cantilever parasols are suited to restaurant outdoor dining areas, hotel pool areas or residential gardens.
The Global Parasol cantilever parasol range is selected from some of the finest parasol products available in the world.
We offer unrivaled service, backed by full warranties on all our parasols.

A Cantilever parasol, often also referred to a side-post, side arm or free-arm parasol is a stylish and practical type of outdoor umbrella designed to provide shade without a central pole. Unlike traditional parasols, the cantilever parasol is supported by a mast and base to the side of the canopy as opposed to the centre of the canopy, allowing the canopy to float over the desired area. This gives you unobstructed space beneath the umbrella – ideal for furniture layouts where a central pole would just get in the way.
Perfect for hotels, pubs, cafes, and restaurant terraces as well as domestic gardens, cantilever parasols combine sleek design with functional benefits. They’re often viewed as a stylish upgrade that offers both elegance and flexibility in bustling hospitality environments or modern gardens.
Cantilever parasols offer several standout features that make them a favourite for both residential and commercial outdoor spaces. The side-arm design frees up space directly beneath the canopy, giving you more flexibility with your layout. Want to shade a dining table or a couple of loungers? No problem – no pole in the middle to cramp your style.
Many models come with the ability to rotate through 360 degrees and multi-angle tilt functions, meaning you can easily adjust the canopy as the sun moves. Add to that UV-resistant fabrics, water-repellent materials, and heavy duty frames, and you’ve got a winning combo of style and performance.
Cantilever parasols are incredibly versatile. Our parasols offer stylish and practical shade solutions for a wide range of outdoor settings. Looking to cover an outdoor table, provide shade for restaurant or café patios, create a designated smoking area, or offer shelter in playgrounds and outdoor classrooms? Our parasols are designed to meet the need.
They’re also perfect for sun loungers by the pool, or even offering comfort for spectators at sporting events. Cantilever parasols shine in commercial settings – think restaurant terraces or café courtyards – where flexibility and a polished look, combined with the additional space that a cantilever parasol provides, you have a winning combination.
Quality cantilever parasols are built to last. The frame is usually made from powder-coated aluminium, sometimes combined with steel, offering strength and resistance to rust or corrosion. Some premium models feature stainless steel or treated wood for a high-end look.
The canopy fabric should be UV-resistant, fade-resistant, and ideally water-repellent. Acrylic fabrics offer the best durability and colour retention. Investing in high-quality materials will save you money (and headaches) in the long run.
One of the major selling points of cantilever parasols is their adjustability. Most models offer multiple tilt angles and 360-degree rotation. This lets you easily follow the sun without having to rearrange your furniture or shuffle about trying to stay in the shade.
Many parasols also feature crank lift systems or tilt mechanisms, making adjustments smooth and effortless. Some very high-end models will even offer the option of built-in LED lighting or outdoor heaters – because why not enjoy a little luxury with your shade?
How cantilever parasols open and close varies. Many open and close just the canopy element, leaving a structure dangling from the frame that then needs to be rotated out of the way. These can also interfere with the tables below, unless the can easily be removed or rotated. More recent designs will normally close back to the side post, this takes the canopy structure neatly out of the way when not in use. It does result in a more complex mechanism meaning that these cantilever parasols can be more costly than those that just hang from the structure.
If you are thinking that lighting and or heating integrated into your cantilever parasol, the options suddenly become more limited. Scolaro offer a lighting solution with their Astro Cantilever Parasols, however if you want the combination of heating and lighting then TUUCI’s Max Manta Cantilever, Max Zero Horizon Cantilever and Max Classic Cantilever parasols offers both. They also offer the only option available for a fully automated cantilever parasol that will open and close at the touch of a button.
When choosing a cantilever parasol, start by measuring your space and thinking about what you’ll use it for. Is it going to be covering a dining table, multiple tables a seating area or possibly sun loungers.
If you are looking for a commercial space, are you expecting it to be up and open most of the time? How much time to you expect to be managing it. Most cantilever parasols don’t like being left up in windy conditions. If you want something robust, with high wind stabilisers, look at the TUUCI Max cantilever parasols, with high wind stabilisers. The shape is important. Aesthetically it can be good to match the shape of the parasol canopy with the space or furniture below. Large rectangular dining tables often go well with rectangular parasols. A large outdoor soft seating area might match well with a large square canopy.
Where the mast is going to be positioned is also worthy of consideration. Most square cantilever parasols will have the mast in the middle of one of the sides. Large rectangles will normally have their mast in the middle of the longest side.
Size and price are intrinsically linked, particularly with cantilever parasols. With the side post having to be more substantial than traditional central pole parasols, larger cantilever parasols require substantial masts and larger ones are going to be much more expensive as a result.
Fabric colour choice needs careful thought. Often matching furniture coverings is the obvious choice, however this isn’t always the best option. A dark canopy colour will let less light through than a light coloured fabric and can create a dark space below. This can be desirable in a venue where the parasols are mostly used at night and additional lighting adds to the ambience, not necessarily so desirable on a sunny pool side. Traditional off white, canvas or coloured fabric is a very popular choice, these neutral shades work well in almost all locations as well as letting through plenty of light, while still providing ample protection from the harmful rays of the sun.
In residential locations, think about where the sun moves during the day and if you need to move the shade as the sun moves. The positioning of the mast and base is very important to help maximise the shade. Look at how any rotation or tilt functionality will affect the area being shaded. Is it going to be possible to follow the sun just by rotating the mast, or do you need to move the whole parasol to get the coverage you need throughout the day. This may be a key consideration when deciding upon how the parasol is to be fixed or installed.
Consider the material, wind resistance, and ease of use. Look for models with heavy-duty bases or ground-mount options, if your area is exposed to wind. Freestanding bases may be convenient and more cost effective at the outset, but cantilever parasols are particularly unstable and if you are going to use a freestanding base this may need to be very heavy. There are models available with heavy bases and wheels that will provide good stability and additional flexibility, allowing the whole parasol to be moved easily.
Style matters. There are a plethora of colours of both the fabric and the frame to choose from. TUUCI offer the most choice with a good selection of powder coated frame finishes and their AlumaTeak range of wood finishes. Umbrosa and Scolaro both offer a smaller set range of colour options in both frame and fabric. (LINKS) Tradewinds offer just one size, but available with 20 colours, so this is probably ample choice for most users.
If you have a traditional setting or are looking for something not too wacky, then options from Tradewinds or Scolaro should sit well. Wanting something a bit more contemporary? then take a look at the Umbrosa Spectra and Umbrosa Versa models. TUUCI also offer a number of very contemporary cantilever parasols that can also have heating and lighting added.
Be cautious when comparing cantilever parasols from suppliers, particularly low cost ones. Cantilever parasols are typically more expensive than centre post parasols. To assess a supplier’s reliability, ask if they can provide spare parts for a cantilever parasol purchased last year. If they can’t, it’s unlikely they’ll support future purchases either.
We offer a curated selection of high-quality cantilever parasols that blend style, durability, and ease of use. From sleek aluminium frames to fade-resistant canopies, our products are designed to enhance your outdoor experience season after season.
We also provide excellent customer support and advice to help you choose the perfect model for your space. Whether you’re furnishing a private garden or a commercial patio, we’ve got you (literally) covered.
Yes, most are made from water-repellent materials, but it’s best to close and cover them during heavy rain to extend their lifespan.
Use a properly weighted base, anchor it to the ground, and always close it in strong winds. The best base for a cantilever parasol is a fixed base as opposed to a freestanding one.
Many models offer 360-degree rotation for flexible shading throughout the day.
It depends on your space and what you are trying to cover. If you are covering a dining table we normally recommend a minimum overhang all round the table of at least 5cm to allow for dining chairs
With proper care, a quality parasol can last 5–10 years or more.
Some are, especially those with wheeled bases. But they can be heavy, so plan their placement carefully.
Cantilever parasols are supported from the side, not the centre, offering more usable space underneath.
Some models do! Look for versions with LED lighting and or heating. See TUUCI range.
Yes, all our brands offer replacement canopies in different colours.
To keep your cantilever parasol in top shape, give it a little TLC. Regularly brush off dirt and debris. A number of the canopies we supply are washable and the smaller ones can be washed in a domestic washing machine on a cold wash. However the fabric will need to be re-treated to retain its water resistance.
We offer a number of products to help clean and protect and well as re-treat the canopy.
When not in use, close and cover the parasol, especially during windy or stormy weather. Store it indoors during the off-season if possible, or use a waterproof cover. A little maintenance goes a long way in extending the life of your investment.
We offer expert repair services and ongoing maintenance to keep your parasols in top condition. From replacing broken parts to refreshing fabric and frames, we help extend the life of your shade solution and keep it looking great season after season.
